Breakfast by Hunter Bishop

Breakfast is a short film about two young men who, obviously, eat breakfast together. One, Todd, has a radiant, stylish aesthetic, and is well groomed. The other, Griffin, wears more typical clothing and is not as cleaned up. The purpose of the short film is to lead expectations down a similar path with stereotypes – how both characters dress, speak, and their gestures – and then surprise the audience with the reveal of their true sexualities. The goal is to never address either’s sexual preferences during the film, allowing the audience to make the hegemonic inferences in their minds, and then catch them offguard with the reveal.
A straight man myself, I believe I relate strongly to the character of Todd. While I do not view myself to be as expressive or as proper as Todd in his dress and mannerisms, I do see myself as a straight man who is more visibly expressive of my personality and is more hygienic than the average straight man you might find in a gym or barbershop. While someone of my sexuality cannot fully relate to the mentality or mannerisms of someone who identifies as LGBTQA+, I have nonetheless attempted to step out of a zone I am familiar with in writing and write something I cannot identify with as strongly.
