I feel like you did a great job of portraying the emotions of the scene. Your dialogue felt very real and gave a clear view into what you had to deal with. The fact that it was as early as 8th grade makes it even more startling.
I appreciate the kind of thought you put into talking to your friend about her eating habits. you didn’t approach her assuming there was a problem and you kind of just asked if everything was ok. I was just wondering, did you school ever mention mental health before or after this moment or was is just something that wasn’t really talked about?
Wow, I really relate a lot to this story – I went through the same thing in eighth grade as well. I remember how normalized self-harm and eating disorders felt in middle school. I experienced both first-hand and I had many friends who did it too. It was so hard being that young and struggling in those ways, it felt like you had nowhere to turn. I’m so glad you did something about what you saw, good friends are very important in situations like this.
